Several injured, one critically, in Norristown Transportation Center train crash
NORRISTOWN — A train crash critically injured one person and hurt others Sunday morning at the Norristown Transportation Center in Norristown, according to the Norristown Fire Department.
The Norristown Fire Department was one of several first responding agencies that were dispatched around 9:50 a.m. to the station at the intersection of Lafayette and Swede streets, Deputy Chief Richard Lockhart told The Times Herald.
The incident occurred at the elevated platform as “the 100 line ran into the bumper at the end of the line,” Lockhart said.
While the circumstances leading up to the incident were unclear, a dozen people were hurt with injuries ranging from minor to critical. On scene, the Norristown police and fire departments as well as emergency medical services units from Plymouth and Upper Merion townships assisted the wounded.
Of the dozen involved, one was in critical condition and was flown to a trauma center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, according to Lockhart. He added that one person was taken to Paoli Hospital, another six patients were designated as “walking wounded” and the remaining four refused treatment on scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, according to Lockhart.
