Pro football: Former Berks County star signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers

Former Wyomissing star Max Hurleman has signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced on Monday.

Hurleman, who took part in the Steelers’ rookie mini-camp, is listed as a running back in the Steelers’ announcement.

Hurleman, a 2020 graduate of Wyomissing, played four years at Colgate before transferring to Notre Dame for his fifth year of eligibility this past season.

For the Fighting Irish, Hurleman, 5-11, 201 pounds, was a return specialist and defensive back. He returned 23 punts this past season for 138 total yards.

At Colgate, he played wide receiver and was a return specialist, playing in 35 games.

In his last season at Colgate, he was an All-Patriot League First Team Selection on special teams. He also made 28 catches for 273 yards and two touchdowns.

At Wyomissing, Hurleman rushed for 1,238 yards on 134 carries and scored 15 touchdowns in his senior season (2019), earning the BCIAA Player of the Year award.

He started all four years for coach Bob Wolfrum’s Spartans and they went 39-10 during his four seasons.

After starting on defense as a freshman, Hurleman started both ways his last three seasons at Wyomissing.

He also lettered in basketball, lacrosse and track and field in high school.

He was one of two running backs the Steelers signed on Monday, the other being Trey Sermon, and they also signed offensive tackle Garreth Warren, both of whom also  took part in the team’s rookie minicamp.

The team also released running back Aaron Shampklin.
