422 SportsPlex offers adult leagues that offer many health benefits

If you played on a sports team in high school or college, and want to rekindle your love of the game — whether soccer, volleyball, flag football, hockey or basketball — the 422 SportsPlex has an opportunity for you.

“We offer adult leagues because we want all ages to be able to play sports,” said Lakota Grimes who oversees both adult and youth leagues at the sports complex. “For most athletes, your passion for sports never stops once you graduate school, but unfortunately the opportunity does stop once you graduate from school.”

Their adult leagues cater to those who love sports and want to continue playing as they grow older. While most who sign up are 18-55 years of age, you may join an adult league at 16 with the permission of a parent. There are multiple benefits to joining one, regardless of your age.

“The benefits that adults gain from joining leagues are new relationships, a place to escape and play the sport that they love, as well as being able to continue doing something they love,” Grimes said.

Inline hockey

Currently, the most popular adult league they offer is inline hockey.

“Many of the players in our inline league have grown up in this facility and have been playing for the last 15 to 20 years,” Grimes said. “I think this league is so popular because of the niche for the sport and not many areas around offer inline hockey leagues.”

Most people who join SportsPlex’s leagues are those who have grown up and played at their facility since they were kids, but anyone is welcome.

“I think what motivates them to join is their passion for the sport, as well as trying to keep themselves active and busy,” she said.

Co-ed leagues

All adult leagues they offer are currently co-ed with men making up 95% of the leagues and women 5%.

While the leagues are considered recreational, players tend to be competitive when they meet up one to two times a week to play. Leagues are offered year-round.

“I have seen so many friendships develop and grow all because of their love for these sports and those friends extend well outside of the SportsPlex, which is such an awesome thing to see,” Grimes said. “Family members and friends of players go to the facility as well, so it has become a family environment and a family-oriented league.”

Rewards

Grimes has gained many rewards through her work with SportsPlex.

“The most enjoyable thing for me is just watching the athletes grow and develop lifelong friendships,” Grimes said. “Over the past few years of working here, I have gained some really awesome friendships with our everyday clients and I am very grateful for that. I enjoy seeing their faces each week and just catching up with them.”
