Daytime lane closure planned on Route 422 in both directions Monday

LOWER POTTSGROVE — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that temporary barrier and sign installations will occur on Route 422 in Lower Pottsgrove under an $83.6 million project to reconstruct and improve approximately 1.7 miles of the expressway and replace two bridges between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions: Monday, Dec. 4, through Friday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., a single lane closure will be in place on eastbound Route 422 between Armand Hammer Boulevard and Evergreen Road; and Monday, Dec. 4, through Friday, Dec. 8, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., a single lane closure will be in place on westbound Route 422 between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather-dependent.

The purpose of this project is to extend the design life and improve the ride quality and safety of Route 422 and improve the current condition of roadside elements such as stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guiderail and signs that are in poor condition, according to PennDOT.

Under this Section M1B project, Route 422 will be reconstructed on both existing and revised alignments to improve horizontal curve radii, shoulder widths, and vertical clearance to enhance travel and safety, PennDOT said in a press release.

A culvert at Sprogels Run, located just east of Porter Road, along with an existing single-span bridge carrying U.S. 422 over Porter Road, will be removed and replaced with a new two-span bridge, according to PennDOT. The bridge carrying U.S. 422 over Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek will also be reconstructed and widened.

Additional improvements include:

• Reconstructing and lengthening the acceleration ramp from the Sanatoga Interchange (Township Line Road) to westbound U.S. 422;

• Installing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment and components along the U.S. 422 corridor and on arterial roadways;

• Constructing sound barriers along portions of westbound U.S. 422;

• Upgrading existing signage and installing new signage;

• Replacing the closed system drainage system and cross culverts throughout the project limits;

• and Improving stormwater management facilities, including two extended detention basins.

The Section M1B project is the seventh project to move to construction under PennDOT’s initiative to rebuild and improve the U.S. 422 Bypass near Pottstown. Since 2012, PennDOT has invested more than $260 million to improve the U.S. 422 corridor in Montgomery and Chester counties.
