Mercury Local Roundup (Dec. 6): Pottsgrove, PJP boys hoops both off to 3-0 starts to begin new season

Boys Basketball

Pottsgrove 73, Daniel Boone 56

Deymein Doctor scored a game-high 22 points as the Falcons took care of Daniel Boone on day one of the Pottsgrove Tip-Off Tournament. Julius Marshall and Bryce Phillips added 12 points apiece for Pottsgrove, which improved to 3-0 on the season.

Pope John Paul II 52, Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter 40

PJP also jumped out to a perfect 3-0 start to its season as the Golden Panthers were buoyed by a 20-point third quarter on day one of the City of Basketball Love Tournament at Exeter Township. Ayden Wise led the Panthers with 18 points and Jason Green chipped in 14 in the win.

Pottstown 66, Lower Moreland 48

Pottstown  grabbed a 24-11 lead after one quarter and raced to victory in its first game of the season on day one of the Pottsgrove Tip-Off Tournament. Elias Butler led the Trojans with 21 points and Syncere Whitehurst chipped in 11. Pottstown got additional contributions from Cole Boyles (10 points) and Kam Robinson (eight points).

Phoenixville 62, Renaissance Academy Charter School 33

Deacon Baratta led four Phoenixville scorers in double figures with 14 points as the Phantoms improved to 2-0 with a dominant win on the first day of the Phantoms’ two-day tip-off tournament. Stephen Yurick (13 points), Keron Booth (11 points) and Trey Lear (10 points) also delivered strong performances in the victory.

Upper Perkiomen 44, Tulpehocken 40

Grayson Sabo, Darius Reid and Vincent Gallasi all scored 12 points to lead Upper Perkiomen to its first win of the season on day one of Tulpehocken’s Tip-Off Tournament.

Hatboro-Horsham 72, Upper Merion 46

Isaiah Robinson scored a team-high 10 points for Upper Merion but the Vikings fell to 0-3 on the season in a non-league loss to the Hatters.

Girls Basketball

Pottsgrove 66, Brandywine Heights 62 (OT)

Pottsgrove’s first game of the season was an overtime thriller that ended in victory as the Falcons were led by senior Aleah Rockemore’s 18 points on day one of the school’s tip-off tournament. Freshmen Kendra Ivory (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Layla Jelbauiai (11 points, nine rebounds) were major difference-makers in the first game of their high school careers. Thelia Dellaquilla came off the bench to contribute 10 points for the Falcons, while Ava Leaman and Nyla Stubbs were defensive stalwarts in the win.

Owen J. Roberts 39, Norristown 24

Owen J. Roberts kicked off the Wildcat Tip-Off Classic with a victory over PAC rival Norristown behind 12 points from Lia Bonney. Devon King (10 points) and Kira Sorzano (nine points) were also instrumental in picking up the win.

Upper Perkiomen 35, Tulpehocken 29

Upper Perk won their second straight game following a season-opening loss, knocking off Tulpehocken on day one of the host’s tip-off tournament. Jenna Langenback led all Indians’ scorers with 11 points while adding five rebounds and three steals to the score sheet. Olivia Keyser (eight points, seven rebounds) and Burgundy Gahman chipped in seven points and four boards.

Methacton 58, Ridley 27

Methacton won all four quarters, using a 17-5 advantage in the second period to top Ridley on the first day of the 16th Annual Lady Warrior Classic. Abby Arnold led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points for Methacton, who also got solid production from Olivia Organtini (nine points), Abby Masotta (eight points) and Avery Kenney (seven points).

William Tennent 49, Phoenixville 45

Kayden Baratta scored a game-high 21 points for Phoenixville on day one of the Souderton Jim Church Classic, but Tennent outscored the Phantoms 13-4 in a pivotal third quarter that proved to be the difference. Phoenixville fell to 0-2 on the young season.

York Suburban 56, Spring-Ford 39

Kareena Preuss scored a team-high 11 points but Spring-Ford dropped its first game of the season on the first day of the Governor Mifflin Tip-Off Tournament. Lilly Brescia and Emma Kaercher each chipped in eight points in the loss.

Perkiomen picked up a hard-fought win in the pool over Pennington on Friday, scoring victory in the following events:

200 freestyle: Ryan Delp, 1:59.00

50 freestyle: Gavin Spodek, 24.04

100 butterfly: Luke Schafer, 57.06

500 freestyle: Delp, 5:13.49

100 backstroke: Schafer, 58.97

Girls Indoor Track

In the first Delaware Valley Girls’ Track Coaches’ Association indoor meet of the year at Alvernia University, Boyertown’s Harper Glennon won the 60-meter dash in 7.85 seconds, setting a school record in the process. Brianna Stankina took sixth place in the 60-meter hurdles, as did Samantha Hemingway in the high jump. Taylor Rosen finished ninth in the 200-meter dash, and the Bears’ distance medley relay team also produced a ninth-place finish.
