Mercury roundup (Sept. 20): Methacton girls volleyball pulls out five-set win over Upper Merion

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Methacton 3, Upper Merion 2 (16-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-20, 15-6)

Kayla Ginther paved the way for a five-set Warriors win with 12 kills and an ace Madison Roeger tacked on seven kills and three blocks while Emma Shaffer added six kills and five aces. Rachel Pettine paced Methacton’s offense with 39 assists, three kills and three aces. Defensively, Mianna Ly notched 13 digs and both Roeger and Makayla Batten had three blocks. The Warriors now hold a 5-2 overall record and 4-2 in the PAC.

Owen J. Roberts 3, Phoenixville 0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20)

Highlights: Kristen Brown logged 11 kills and a dig for the Phantoms. Kailey Hudy served five aces, tallied 19 assists and made eight digs. Gianna Buce had nine digs and an ace while Carla DeBow had two kills and two blocks.

Pope John Paul II 3, Norristown 0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-9)

Highlights: Josie Arezina posted seven kills while Maeve Gallagher and Brooke Collins had five kills apiece. Bria Daly tallied 15 assists and Reece Benner made three. Gabriella Manza had nine service points and made three digs. Bria Daly had 11 service points while Emma Bond had nine, and Emma bond had four digs.

Boyertown 3, Pottstown 0 (25-4, 25-6, 25-8)

Highlights: Tori Obarow served nine aces for the Bears. Jenna Christmas tallied 11 assists and Hailey Jones registered five kills.

BOYS SOCCER

Upper Perkiomen 11, Pottstown 0

Highlights: Anthony Macedo scored a hat trick while six players scored all together for the Tribe. Logan Watkins and Matthew Fisher put away two goals apiece. Ben Northern, Theo Deskevich, Luke Gerstenberg and Kevin Proctor added a goal each. Watkins and Evan Sands tallied two assists apiece. Jackson Smith, River Lahr, Fisher, Proctor, Macedo and Deskevich all tallied an assist each.

Upper Merion 9, Pope John Paul II 1

Highlights: Five first-half goals were more than enough for the Vikings to take a PAC Frontier win over the Golden Panthers. Julian Russo scored Pope John Paul II’s lone goal on a feed from Braden Sidebotham in the second half. Jason Krum (10 saves) and Carl Robinson (six saves) rotated net duties for the Golden Panthers.

Highlights: A pair of unnassisted, first half goals from Lena Ackerman and Megan Kurian lifted the Rams over the Vikings in PAC Liberty action. Jewel Kershner and Molly Kennedy both tallied assists. Spring-Ford outshot Perkiomen Valley 6-2 and held a 4-3 advantage in corners. Olivia Hulayew came up with four saves for the Vikings and Olivia Neild made two saves for the Rams.

Upper Perkiomen 9, Pottstown 0

Highlights: Twenty minutes into the game, the Trojans gave up a penalty kick that was converted by center back Elizabeth Proctor for what became a permanent lead, 1-0. Sarah Fisher (three goals, one assist), Sarah Straup (two goals), Megan Cairns (three assists) and Brooke Sullivan all dialed up the Tribe to a 6-0 halftime lead and Elena Buckwalter added a goal in the second half as well. Moran Sweed and Elyse Kreiner tallied assists while Ava Long had five saves for the clean sheet.

Highlights: Emerson Storti scored four goals for the Wildcats in a PAC Liberty win over the Eagles. Audrey Fleck (two assists), Fiona Sanders, McKenzie Hagerty, Mary Lustig and Anaka Casey all added a goal each.

Boyertown 2, Methacton 1

Highlights: Peyton Shellaway put the Bears on the board in the second quarter after converting on a give-and-go corner from Elise Eves. Boyertown doubled its lead in the third frame on another Shellaway goal via a tip off a corner strike from Emily Ulrich.

With eight minutes left in the game, the Warriors cut the game to one score with a goal from Renee Blake. Addie Galianese registered nine saves for the Bears and Maddy McKenney had seven saves for Methacton. The Bears held a 14-9 advantage in corners.

Spring-Ford 7, Norristown 0

Highlights: Seven different players found the back of the cage for the Rams in a PAC Liberty win over the Eagles. Marissa Cagliola scored the initial goal in the first quarter on a feed from Maddie Friend at the 8:53. From there, Nina Scott, Emmy Herrschaft, Morgan Evak and Jackie Fissel piled on unnassisted goals to pull away. Evak assisted Marina Granieri late and Emmy Herrschaft capped Spring-Ford’s scoring. The Rams outshot Norristown 16-5 with a 5-2 edge in corners. Brandis Baylor provided 10 saves for the Eagles.
