Steel River Playhouse in Pottstown presents ‘I and You’ on April 21
POTTSTOWN — Opening Friday, April 21, Steel River Playhouse will present “I and You,” an ode to youth, life, love, and the strange beauty of human connectedness.
The show is written by Lauren Gunderson and directed by Leena Devlin. Anthony will be played by Keith Willis with Caroline by Isabella Yackanicz. The production will be held in the intimate setting of the Newberry Loft.
The play tells the story of what happens one afternoon when Anthony arrives unexpectedly at classmate Caroline’s door bearing a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass,” an urgent assignment from their English teacher.
Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasn’t been to school in months, but she is as quick and sardonic as Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular. As these two let down their guards and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane poetry project unlocks a much deeper mystery that has brought them together.
Director Leena Devlin notes that “Throughout our rehearsal process, we have explored themes of isolation, mortality, fully living and ultimately the awesome power of human connection. Neither Caroline nor Anthony will ever be the same after this meeting. We truly do need one another in profound and sometimes very surprising ways.”
“I and You” will be presented on April 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 7 p.m. at Steel River Playhouse, 245 E. High St., Pottstown. Matinees will be presented at 2 p.m. on April 23, 29, and 30. The running time for this one-act show is approximately 80 minutes.
