World War II Weekend runs Friday through Sunday in Reading

Historians and aviation enthusiasts worldwide will meet at Reading Regional Airport, the former General Carl A. Spaatz Army Airfield, from Friday through Sunday for the Mid Atlantic Air Museum’s annual World War II Weekend.

They come to honor World War II veterans, chat with reenactors, view military gear, weapons and armor, enjoy period entertainment, and be thrilled by aerial flight demonstrations performed by authentic World War II aircraft.

The event will feature 80 World War II aircrafts, 1,500 reenactors, 200 military vehicles and 250 military flea market vendors.

The Mid Atlantic Air Museum is arranging an impressive assortment of aircraft displayed on the ground and in the air all three days. Also, at least a dozen World War II veterans in attendance will be available for autographs and provide firsthand accounts of their war experiences. This list includes retired District Judge and B-25 tail-gunner Quentin Stambaugh of Spring Grove, Pa.

On Friday, the Delaware Aviation Museum will honor 100-year-old Judge Stambaugh with a flight in a B-25J similar to the model he flew in while serving with the Air Apaches in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.

The Mid Atlantic Air Museum’s spacious grounds will contain Living History displays of American, Allied and Axis equipment. In addition, reenactors will be present to provide detailed accounts of life on the frontlines and the homefront.

Frank Sings Frank, America’s Sweethearts, The Forecast Quartet, The Spirit of the Airways and WRDG Radio will provide period entertainment. In addition, big band concerts are scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights from 7 to 10.

World War II Weekend has been consistently ranked by USA Today as one of the top five air shows in North America.
